Woodwinds and brasswinds make up the majority of instruments in orchestral ensembles. Both instruments’ mouthpieces require wind—or blown air—to create sound. Woodwinds generally include reeds while brasswinds do not. Recorders are woodwinds that do not require reeds to create sound. While woodwind instruments are created from wood or metal, brasswinds are solely created from metal or brass. Having a reed is what distinguishes metal-made woodwinds from brasswinds.
