Knapp’s Music Center Explains the Purpose and Function of an Amplifier

An amplifier’s purpose is to increase the volume of sound. Usually, amplifiers connect to electric guitars. The amplifier receives a small electrical signal and enlarges it. This produces sound through one or more loudspeakers. Amplifiers also enlarge the sound from bass and acoustic guitars. Pre-amplifiers, which send signals to amplifiers, also enlarge the sound from microphones. Amplifier classes include A, B, A/B, and G and H. Below is an explanation of these classes:

Class A Amplifiers

Class A amplifiers output devices typical efficiency is approximately 15 to 35 percent. The main advantage of having Class A amplifiers is they produce minimal crossover distortion. (Distortion is the alteration of the waveform in the audio signal.) This advantage makes Class A amplifiers less susceptible to humming.

Class B Amplifiers

Class B amplifiers output devices typical efficiency is approximately 70 percent. This makes them more efficient than Class A amplifiers. The downside with this level of efficiency is the frequency of crossover distortion.

Class A/B Amplifiers

Class A/B amplifiers output devices typical efficiency is approximately 50 to 70 percent. This type of amplifier combines the best of both classes. Class A/B amplifiers monopolize the consumer market.

Class G and H Amplifiers

Class G and H amplifiers output devices typical efficiency is also approximately 50 to 70 percent. This type of amplifier is a variation upon Class A/B. The difference between A/B and G and H is the latter keeps the amplifier’s cooling and input power requirements down.
